An
Intelligent Life. A Practical Guide to Relationships, Intimacy and
Self-Esteem
by Dr Julian Short
Paperback
Random House; ISBN: 1740513436
The author (an Australian Psychiatrist) wrote to me:
"It's totally practical, has no positive thinking and no spirituality but plenty of guidelines for positive action. I maintain relationships are everything and self esteem comes through skilful handling of intimacy. The evolutionary principle that underlies the book is the notion that love, belonging and attachment are herding, safety behaviour and individuality is territoriality. Rocket science it ain't, but it's a position many patients find appealing. I suggest that self esteem has two issues only: love and individuality and feeling good is the simultaneous maximising of both. So the whole book is about relationships and inevitably about the self esteem of your partner, the recognisable behaviours of self doubt and how to respond to them."
