Mission Statement & Charter

1. The Interest Group shall be known as The Evolutionary Psychiatry Interest Group.

2. The purpose of the Interest Group shall be to debate, investigate and exchange information and ideas about Darwinian evolutionary theory applied to human behaviour and mental disorders (“evolutionary psychiatry”), among interested Fellows of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and other Australian psychiatrists.

3. The Interest Group hopes to encourage the use of evolutionary theory as a powerful and effective conceptual and informative framework by psychiatrists and other clinicians and mental health professionals, for their use in the assessment and treatment of mental disorders.  The Group hopes to assist and promote the incorporation of this growing knowledge base into the teaching of trainees and the encouragement of further research by peers and other disciplines into its merits and clinical applications.

4. The primary method for accomplishing these purposes shall be to hold a meeting to be held monthly at The RANZCP NSW Branch Office at 761 Darling Street, Rozelle NSW 2039.  The Group will also hold an annual seminar where members and invited speakers will have the opportunity to present lectures and conduct workshops on relevant topics related to evolutionary psychiatry for the benefit of members and other interested psychiatrists.

5. All Australian and New Zealand psychiatrists, who wish to explore and contribute to the development and use of evolutionary theory to improve understanding of mental disorders and to instruct research and treatment, shall be eligible for membership.

6. A Chairperson and co-chairperson will be elected directly by the members on an annual basis at an AGM to be held concordantly with the annual general seminar (AGS).  The Chairperson shall be responsible for the administration of meetings and to correspond with the Editor of The Newsletter (the monthly journal published by the NSW Branch of the RANZCP) to summarise the group’s charter, advertise meeting dates and offer membership to interested persons.  The co-chairperson will preside when/if the chairperson is unavailable.

7. Any dues for membership shall be determined by the members on an annual basis, at the AGM.  The method of payment shall be by an annual subscription to be paid either to the Chairperson or via the RANZCP as part of the RANZCP’s annual “Subscription Notice”, where the Evolutionary Psychiatry Interest Group will be listed amongst the other Faculties, Sections and Interest Groups under “Optional Memberships & Subscriptions”.

8. The Chairperson shall receive and have custody of the Interest Group’s funds, maintain its accounts and pay expenses.

9.  The Interest Group shall be not-for-profit and any member’s funds shall be used exclusively for expenses related to the continued functioning of the Group, such as costs related to holding meetings, distribution of information about the Group’s activities, costs associated with the inviting speakers, etc.  Wherever possible, the Group will attempt to utilise existing resources of the RANZCP and the Group’s individual members.

10. The Interest Group will publish relevant information regarding its activities, collate information about evolutionary psychiatry and develop links with other relevant sites through a Web Site.  The domain name www.evolutionarypsychiatry.org.au has been obtained for this purpose.  Due to the length of the name, an application has been forwarded for the shortened version www.ep.org.au.
